#Le Chameau Size Guide
Ensuring you get the right fit is always important especially when it comes to footwear. You want to make sure that you can feel comfortable wearing them, whether it’s for a short walk or all-day long. With Le Chameau, you can be assured of comfortable and long-lasting footwear designed to support your foot in all the right places. The sleek curves, individual calf sizes and special fits in some styles, means that Le Chameau can offer a truly personalised fit. But it can be a daunting task finding what fits best; Ladies, Men’s, Unisex, size up or size down?
Le Chameau have researched and measured many feet to work out the average foot size, and from there, decide style, fitting, comfort and material in order to make the best rubber boots.
Here at Philip Morris & Son, we want you to make the right decision when it comes to investing in a pair of Le Chameau footwear so we’ve made this handy guide to help you out.
You may have noticed that Le Chameau do 3 styles; Ladies, Men’s and Unisex. Whilst they all have typical stereotypes to their names, it does not mean that you can’t have Men’s because you are a female. Besides no-one will be able to tell the difference! These are simply different variations based on lots of research to get the truest fit, so you can get what is right for you.
So, what’s the difference?
When people ask “What’s the difference between men’s and women’s?”, we normally say that women’s boots have a slimmer profile, this means that the instep is more fitted and the calf width is slimmer. To show you the difference, we paired some men’s and women’s Vierzonord boots so you can see the comparison…
Whilst the ladies’ footwear looks rather snug, Le Chameau believes that a well and truly fitted pair of boots require the assistance of a boot jack to remove them. You will discover many people comment on how well supported around the foot a pair of Le Chameau boots can be. Furthermore, to add to Le Chameau’s theory, we advise using a boot jack with all footwear to prevent kick damage to the heel and for extending the quality of life for your boots.
The biggest difficulty we encounter when finding the right pair of boots for our customers is getting the right calf size and we can assure you that you are not alone! Based on the average foot sizing with Le Chameau, ladies’ footwear tends to have a calf circumference approximately between 37-39cm depending on the boot. Whilst the men’s calf average between 39-46cm. Boots with an adjustable side gusset, like the Vierzonord, give more leeway and support giving you control of the fit. Boots without this feature, such as the zipped Chasseur boots can vary from 41cm, 44cm and even 46cm calf sizes in some styles.
Here’s a chart guide providing calf sizes for some of your favourites. If you can’t see the boots you’re looking for then please do not hesitate to contact us and we will be happy to help.
To ensure you get the right size, follow these steps for measuring your calf.
- Take a seat, that’s the easy part!
- Ensure you have bare legs
- Make sure your knee is positioned at a 90-degree angle
- Measure around the widest part of your calf
- Add 2cm to take jeans and socks into account
Foot Size
So, you’ve got the right style and calf width now but what about foot size? Le Chameau recommend taking your normal foot size when choosing their footwear. But if in doubt, and you normally take a half size, then it’s better to take the larger size as it will always be more comfortable than a boot that is too small a size. If you’re considering wearing thicker socks, then Le Chameau boots are generous enough to allow these to be worn with your normal foot size. To help make your decision slightly easier you should note that the choice of lining, whether it’s neoprene, leather or cotton, has no impact on the fit and size of the boot.
You'll also notice that Le Chameau footwear come in EU sizes and some styles have different conversions to our UK sizing. Therefore, we advise checking the individual size guides available on our product pages to help get the correct size for you!
If our handy guide has helped you decide which boot is right for you, then why not head over to our website where we have a huge range of Le Chameau footwear just waiting for you!
If you’re overwhelmed by all this information, then please do not despair! Our customer service team is only a phone call away, so please get in touch and will be happy to answer any questions you might still have.

My calf measures 32cm over jodhpurs and long socks. I think the vierzonord will be too big fir me although I like the style. If too wide at the top hay, shavings, etc get into the boot – this is the problem I am having with my present boots. How tight can the buckle be tightened and still look ok?
Megan
The Vierzonord can be tightened to approximately 35cm but this may slightly vary depending on thickness of socks and trousers. The gusset itself has got a slit to allow it to be tightened so it won’t look out of place when tightened. We hope this helps.

I love when I’m out in the country, it’s a great reason to wear country clothes.

I have narrow feet, taking a AA fit. Which style would work best.
Patrick
The ladies Le Chameau wellington boots have a slimmer profile and therefore you may find that these are better suited for your feet. If you require any further information on a particular style of Le Chameau footwear.
Ailsa McKay
I also have AA width feet and Le Chameau ladies are the only wellington boots that fit me without slipping round my heels. They also have great grip on the soles. I bought mine a couple of years ago after an extensive search and love them.
Paul Robinson
I have size 7 but very wide would i need a larger size?
Megan
With regards to Le Chameau footwear, the wellingtons are designed to mould your feet and calf for the best comfort so you may find these to be snug fitting. However it is always best to try your true size and then you can always go up or down a size from there to get the best fit.
Sarah
Could you provide some advice on the height of the boot? I have short legs!
Megan
Please could you confirm which boot, and what size, you are enquiring about and we will obtain a measurement for you?
Ellie
My calves are 39cms wide. I would love a pair of rouge/cherry wellies. Could you advise me on what model to go with please?
Megan
The Le Chameau ladies wellington boots have a calf size of approx 38cm so you may find the brand new Iris boot suitable but if you prefer something adjustable then the Vierzon range would be ideal as you can control the fitment. Regrettably, these are not available in rouge/cherry but I have provided a link for the Iris wellington boots if these are of interest:

Please could you tell me the calf width of the Andalou riding/Wellington boots?
Megan
The calf measurement for the Andalou is approximately 41cm based on a EU40 (UK6.5). This may vary slightly depending on the size chosen.

I have just received my boots a d they fit once I get them on, but putting the on and getting them off is not easy. Is this normal or should I return to get the next size up?
Megan
Le Chameau footwear is designed to fit snugly and sculpt your ankle and leg for a flattering look. If you were to size up, you may find your feet sliding in the boots which could potentially cause blisters and discomfort. Have you tried using a boot jack to remove your boots? This is the easiest and most recommended way to remove any footwear as it prevents damage to the heel and therefore prolonging the life of the boot.
YY
I have small but wide feet. I usually wear 35. For flip-flop I wear 34 and 36 for close-fitted sports shoes. Feet wide is C. What size should I take if I buy Vierzonord?
Megan
Le Chameau footwear is quite fitted so you may find sizing up to be a suitable option. However, if you are unsure, then we advise taking your normal size then you can always decide to size up or size down from there.
Becca
I bought a pair of Vierzonord and when I tried them on I had a terrible time getting them off. (I’m a size 8 US , 40 in your size) It took my husband helping and about an hour to finally get the boot off. When I put it on it felt great, nice comfortable fit but, there has to be an easier way to remove them. Any suggestions other then a boot jack? I’ve read using a plastic bag but, that seems silly and unproductive. I would think it would make your foot slide. Any suggestions would be great.
Megan
Apart from using a boot jack, there is no other suitable way to remove the wellington without causing damage to the heel. Using a plastic bag is normally advisable to help insert your foot into the boot, rather than removing it although I can understand how this might work.
Steve Prentice
I have UK9 feet however with some shoes I find my big toe rubs. I also have 45cm calves(with jeans on). Would you recommend the EUR 43 and XXL calf fit in the Chasseur?
Megan
The Le Chameau Chasseur wellington should be suitable footwear for your requirements and we always advise trying your normal foot size (EU43) first as you can always go up or down from there. Another alternative is the Le Chameau Vierzonord XL which has a side gusset that can expand up to 46cm.
Lisa Mellor
Is there a difference between the height of the men’s and women’s vierzonord boots? Also, what is the range of the calf measurement on each? So for example, where it says the women’s is 38cm, does that mean it can be adjusted to between 37-39cm or is 38cm the maximum/minimum? Hope that makes sense!
Megan
Both men’s and women’s Vierzonord boots have a similar height so there is no obvious difference. The calf measurement of 38cm is referring to the circumference of the top of the boot in its normal position. This can be adjusted to be smaller or larger with the gusset and clip fastening feature.
Sarah
Can you confirm which boot would be suitable for wider ladies calves, and also I am looking for a warm, comfortable boot which will also be suitable for taking to ski resorts. I was looking at the leather versions. What do you think?
Megan
The Vierzonord boots would be a suitable option as they have the adjustable size gusset which can expand to suit your calf size. Depending on how much insulation you would like, neoprene can withstand temperatures as low as -15°c whereas leather provides both insulation and comfort.
Sara G
I am looking to buy wellingtons for my husband. He has very wide feet (usually an F or G fitting), size 8 and wide calves (44cm). As tier 4 residents I would like to buy online. Do you have anything which would fit him?
Megan
For your husband’s calf size, we would advise a wellington with a side gusset so they can expand to fit better. With regards to the wide fitting, regrettably, the majority of our wellingtons are only available in a standard width.
Hunter does, however, stock an Argyll wellington boot which provides a more generous fit in general which may prove suitable. I have provided a link below:

Jane Morgan
My husband has a very high instep – could you recommend which boots would be suitable please. He has found that Hunter boots do not suit him as they are too tight across the top of the foot.
Megan
If your Husband does not find the Hunter boots suitable then we do not advise Le Chameau as these are slightly more fitted. Hunter does, however, stock an Argyll wellington boot which provides a more generous fit in comparison to the regular Hunter boots which may prove more successful. I have provided a link below:
www.philipmorrisdirect.co.uk/hunter-argyll-full-knee-wellington-boots
Ellie
I’m looking for a pair of boots for my other half. He is a 49cm calf what type would you recommend as he has very muscly calfs.
Megan
Regrettably, the Le Chameau footwear only goes up to a 46cm calf and as this size is only available in the zipped boots, there is no room to expand further like the side gusseted boots (Vierzonord). We advise getting a boot with a side gusset to allow room to expand for the calf however we do not stock anything suitable for your size sorry.
Nicola
Please can you confirm what the widest calf measurement is that the Vierzonord goes to? I’ve seen it’s 38cm in its normal position but how much does the side gusset expand? (I’m a size 6/39). I can’t seem to find this information anywhere.
Megan
Regrettably, we currently do not have any size 6 Ladies Vierzonords in stock to be able to check the measurement, therefore, we contacted Le Chameau to advise. They have confirmed that the Ladies Vierzonord has a calf of 38cm which has 2cm flexibility with the gusset. If you are looking for a wider boot then they recommend trying either the Chasseur style or the men’s Vierzonord as they have a 41cm calf as standard.
Angela
Could you please tell me how wide the CERES XL is in the calf? I am torn beteeen them and Saint Hubert. My calf width is 44cm but my ankle is small.
Megan
The Le Chameau Ceres wellington boot calf girth starts from 40cm (sizes EU39-EU40) and goes up to 44cm (sizes EU45-EU47).
Paige
My calf measures at 40cms and am only a size 4. I like the Vierzonord boot, but noticed that it says it fits calf’s up to 38cm. Would this boot fit me?
Megan
The ladies Vierzonord has a calf girth of 38cm but with the side gusset, this can expand by 2cm.
M
I have ordered and now returned two ladies Le Chameau boots. I cannot seem to find the right fit! I normally wear a size 4 in most shoes. I started with the shorter Giverny size 4. I nearly walked out of those. So I went to the leather lined zip Chasseaur size 3 (36) The overall foot felt great but the entire ankle area was very loose and sloppy. I’m just not sure what can be done. Or just trying another brand. Do the children’s Le Chameau have a smaller ankle area?
Megan
Different footwear manufacturers use different lasts to mould their boots so you may find sizing will differ between brands. If you’re looking for a more fitted boot then Le Chameau would be our best suggestion and perhaps try the tall Giverny or the new Iris boot as these provide great support to the leg and ankle. Start with your normal foot size and you can always go up or down from there!
MW
I really am struggling to find suitable wellies. I'm 5.2” and all wellies seem to be way to high for me. I don’t like the half length or shorter styles as they are impractical. I’m a size 3 with a slim leg- what wellies would you best recommend?
Megan
Regrettably, a lot of the standard wellies have a tall profile so there are not many options out there unless you opted for a mid-calf boot. If there is a particular pair of wellies you were interested in then we can certainly try and obtain height measurements for you (subject to stock availability).
Laura
I have a pair of muck boots in a size 6(my normal size) they fit snug but they rub and have caused blisters. I’ve been looking at the men’s vierzonord in a size 7 as I have 40cm calves and like to wear warm socks. Do you think they will be too big and I should be looking at a 6.5 instead?
Megan
The men’s Vierzonord boots have slightly larger proportions to the women’s boots so we advise taking your normal size (UK6) as Le Chameau boots take into account wearing thick socks when it comes to their sizing so there should be no need to size up.
Laura
I’ve just received the men’s vierzonord in a size 6 (my usual size, calve 41cm) and they fit nice everywhere but they are still a little loose around the ankle and sort of scrunch, I’m worried this will damage them when I walk and if it’s better to maybe go for the ladies boot instead.
Megan
It might be worth opting for the ladies Vierzonord then and possibly sizing up to EU40 (UK6.5) to hopefully allow for that extra room you require.
Sandra Beatty
How far up your calf would a size 3 vierzonord Wellington reach? What’s the height?
Megan
The total height for the women’s Vierzonord (UK3) is 38cm.
I
I’m usually a size 6.5 UK but am not sure if I should be sizing up to size 7 if I like to wear thick socks?
Megan
If you’re considering wearing thicker socks, then Le Chameau boots are generous enough to allow these to be worn with your normal foot size. If you are opting for a different brand that doesn’t do half sizes then it’s better to take the larger size as it will always be more comfortable than a boot that is too small a size.
Brad West
I am a size 10 and have measured my calf size plus 2cm to be 47/48cm. I was considering the mens vierzonord but i know my partners le chameau boots seem to have a more narrow calf. What would you advise?
Megan
Regrettably, the Le Chameau wellington boots only go up to a calf fitting of 46cm however with an adjustable gusset, there may be more leeway to expand. We suggest trying the Vierzonord XL as this has a calf fitting up to 46cm and an adjustable gusset.
Marianne
I am looking to find the right size Le Chameau Vierzonord (neoprene inside) ladies rainboot. My foot is 23,5cm long, and 10 cm with (the widest part of my foot, reaching from the smallest toe to the largest toe (toeball). Which EU size will suit my foot the best? (Btw I am 158 cm tall).
Megan
Do you know what EU shoe size you normally take? Le Chameau advises trying your regular EU size first and then you can determine from there whether you need to go up or down a size.

I wear insoles in wellington boots. So thinking I should buy a size larger than my non-insole size to get the additional height above the top of the foot so that I can fit my insoles in. Is this what you would suggest?
Megan
The Le Chameau boots are quite fitted so you may find that with an additional insole, they might be quite snug. However, sizing up would give you the unnecessary extra foot length which might make them too big. We advise starting with your usual foot size and from there you can determine whether you require the extra room by sizing up or not. Another option would be to try the men’s/unisex version of your normal size as the proportions are slightly bigger so this may fit better without the need to size up!
Tommy Cheng
I have size 5 feet but a big calf of 38cm on bare legs, that would mean 40cm calf width wellies are required. Can you possibly advise if the Le Chameau Vierzon would fit the requirement? I have worn size 6 Huntress wide calf wellies, which is just a bit too big on the feet. A size 5 Huntress fits better but calf width is inadequate for thick long socks and trousers.
Megan
The Le Chameau Vierzon Wellington boots have an adjustable gusset therefore the fitment around the calf can be slightly expanded or tightened to suit your requirements.
Monica
I normally wear a size 4 shoe. I have a high instep and bunions. What size le chameau ladies wellingtons would you recommend please. Also what are the differences between the linings. I notice that the vierzonord offer different types.
Tally
The Le Chameau ladies wellingtons are designed to be fitted so if you have a high instep you may have difficulty slipping into them. Something like the Chasseur boot which has a zip may prove easier to get into. The neoprene lining is 3mm of insulating material that keeps your feet warm in temperatures as low as -15, cotton-lined is great for year-round wear and leather is insulating like neoprene but with added comfort. You can read more about wellington linings in our blog post https://blog.philipmorrisdirect.co.uk/boot-linings-explained/
Rebecca
I am looking at the ladies vierzonord boot in UK size 5. Please can you tell me how tall they are as I need 38cm or less due to short legs!
Alice
The Ladies Vierzonord boot in UK size 5 (EU38) has a total height of 40cm.
Debra
I am a 5 with a high instep. Previous full zip Chameaus have given up the ghost. Want another pair but need 40 or 42 calf. Cannot seem to find them anywhere. Have they stopped doing the wider calf size 5?
Alice
Regrettably, the ladies zipped boots only go up to calf size 38. Have you thought about trying the Vierzonords? They have a side gusset which allows for extra calf room.
Annie
I was gifted a pair of Ladies Vierzonord wellies, but they seems snug over the ball of my foot. Will they stretch or should I return them? They are size 42, and I need the slimmer calf as the size 42 mens just swim on my legs and feet. Cheers
Alice
Hi Annie, Thank you for taking the time to comment on our blog.
The Le Chameau wellies are designed to fit the foot and leg so you may experience discomfort if you continue to wear the ladies 42s. We suggest trying the men's Vierzonord but size down to a 41 to see if this fits better. The Vierzonords have an adjustable gusset so you will be able to control the fitment around your calf. We hope this helps. Please do not hesitate to get in contact if you have any further questions.
Sam
I've got this really strange situation.... I'm usualy a Men's 7.5-8, so I tried on the Le Chameau VIERZONORD in an 8 (41) and my foot was swimming in it. I then tried on a 7.5 (40) & my toes are touching the front of the boot!! What do I do now? should I try a ladies boot perhaps?
Alice
Hi Sam, Thank you for taking the time to comment on our blog.
Sorry to hear you are having trouble finding the right fit.
We advise trying the women’s Vierzonords in a size 8 as they have a slimmer proportion and may fit better. We hope that helps.
